Tonya Kerchoff’s 30-year journey with Lakeview Center is a testament to the rich opportunities and the supportive environment that the organization offers. Her story is one of dedication, adaptability, and an unwavering commitment to the populations she serves.
Starting as a volunteer, Tonya’s path with Lakeview Center began just two days before she was offered a part-time position at Meridian, Lakeview’s inpatient psychiatric program that helps children with significant emotional and behavioral challenges. Her dedication and passion quickly led to a full-time role in Lakeview’s Special Populations Unit (SPN) as a direct care provider. For five years, she made a difference in the lives of those with developmental disabilities, a population she grew to deeply love and advocate for.
Tonya’s career at Lakeview Center is marked by significant milestones and accomplishments. After transitioning to the School Overlay program, she worked as a counselor in both high schools, middle schools and elementary schools, providing invaluable support to students. Eventually, she returned to the SPN as a behavior therapist, all while earning her master’s degree and licensure. Today, Tonya proudly serves as SPN Operations Director, continuing to make a lasting impact in her leadership role.
One of Tonya’s proudest accomplishments was her involvement in bringing “Project SEARCH” to the Lakeview/Pensacola Area. Inspired by a conference she attended; Tonya saw the potential of this program to positively impact the lives of developmentally delayed individuals. Despite the challenges posed by Hurricane Ivan, she persevered, working tirelessly for two years to make the program a reality. Her determination and belief in the project’s value ultimately led to its successful implementation, thanks in part to the support of leaders like Lisa Bloodworth, GCE’s senior director of transition and support services. Today, GCE has replicated Project SEARCH sites at five locations across Northwest Florida.
Tonya’s longevity at Lakeview Center reflects the organization’s ability to offer diverse career paths and opportunities for growth. When burnout was a concern, the ability to pivot roles and explore new areas within the organization kept her engaged and motivated. This flexibility, coupled with a strong sense of teamwork and collaboration, has been instrumental in her professional development. challenge
Tonya has embraced a key principle during her time at Lakeview: “When challenges arise – whether it’s a difficult situation or a new federal guideline – remember, it’s not personal. It’s not about you.” By adopting this mindset, she has remained focused, resilient, and positive, allowing her to navigate changes with grace and keep negativity at bay throughout her career. This approach has been instrumental in her success and leadership at Lakeview.
Tonya plans to retire on October 4, with aspirations to continue her passion for faith-based counseling through telehealth. Her passion is connection and fulfillment that comes from helping others. Tonya’s journey from volunteer to leader demonstrates the potential for growth, the importance of perseverance, and the impact that one dedicated individual can have on the lives of many.
