Felix Vasquez, food service worker at the Armed Forces Retirement Home in Washington, D.C. for Global Connections to Employment (GCE), has been a shining example of determination and growth over his 15-year tenure.
Felix has held roles across the kitchen, starting in the dish room, advancing to the pot room and now thriving in food service, where he greets customers, serves on the hot line and manages beverage areas. In all those years, he’s called out sick only twice, a testament to his reliability and commitment.
Felix’s favorite task is working the hot serving line, where he enjoys interacting with customers, asking what they’d like, and ensuring they leave with a smile. His commitment to customer service earned him recognition as Team Member of the Quarter in spring 2024.
Felix credits his success to his supervisor, Marlena Coates, whom he describes as kind, communicative and effective, saying, “We get the job done—no complaints.” Project Manager Samuel Blue echoes this sentiment, noting, “We treat everybody like family, and that’s why people like Felix come every day for 15 years.”
Despite facing challenges with a disability that sometimes makes understanding difficult, Felix’s strong will and determination shine through. Marlena praises his tenacity: “If he sees something and wants to do it, he’s going to give 200%.” This drive has fueled his growth at GCE, where he learned English—arriving unable to speak the language but now able to easily converse.
Felix also earned his GED while working at GCE, a proud accomplishment alongside finishing high school. Outside of work, Felix enjoys playing soccer with friends, dancing to salsa and bachata, and hanging out at the mall. A lover of travel, he visited Ecuador last summer and dreams of moving somewhere warmer.
Looking ahead, Felix aims to become a cook, a goal that reflects his passion for growth. Sam highlights GCE’s supportive culture: “We understand this is a place for disabilities, but we don’t limit anybody here.”
Felix’s journey embodies this ethos, proving that with determination, family-like support, and a willingness to learn, growth knows no bounds. His story inspires us all to give our best, every day.
